Heavy Q&A : Maxwell Paternoster

Whenever I am blasting up my street, every couple of weeks (or days, depending on what I'm working on) something catches my eye from afar. Usually it's a little brown box. As I get closer and closer I see something on it. "Yep - that's the one from Lowbrow."

If you've ever had the pleasure of ordering stuff from Lowbrow Customs you've probably saved the box because... well they are covered in some cool fuckin' illustrations. The gentleman behind those wacky and wild creations is none other than UK based artist and 2 wheeled maniac, Maxwell Paternoster. Open your mind and just let it hurt for a while. It feels good.

Heavy Q&A: Fred Pinckard

Fred Pinckard is a full time tattoo artist at Salvation Tattoo in Richmond VA and a master behind the nozzle of a spray gun. Fred creates head splitting art on people, as well as motorcycles. What stands out with his work is a disregard for the "formula." His works on skin, as well as fiberglass and whatever else, you see where the traditional techniques end and his imagination and experimentation begins. You know... that thing that happens when you really get into it. It's truly something photos on the internet cannot capture.

Fulton Paint Works is Fred's backyard shop for painting motorcycles and small parts, so if you're looking for some 60's and 70's era paint hit him up. You can check out some more samples in this Chop Cult thread. Follow him on the 'ol IG: @fredpinckard

1. Age, Location, Anything else?

I’m 38, live in Richmond VA, work at Salvation Tattoo Gallery and paint under the name Fulton Paint Works

2. Were you born with your skills or did you go to school to hone your craft?

I barely made it out of high school, there’s no way i’d put myself through that again

3. What are you listening to in the studio or shop?

Mostly The Drive By Truckers, The Shiners, Roky Erickson, Baroness, Graveyard

4. CC's or CI’s

Both I do not discriminate.

5. Do you have a favorite Motorcycle trip/camp/country blast that stands out in your memory?

Any day i get to blast around the backroads of Virginia with my wife is a great day in my book!

6. Your favorite place to get a slice? Toppings? Best brew to wash it down?

Pizza in Virginia?  It’s all about the same around here.  Now BBQ, thats a whole different story.  Hands down the best barbecue in Richmond is Alamo BBQ!  The best brew to wash it down, as long as it’s cold it doesn’t matter.

7. Do you find your tattoo work inspires your paint work or vice-verse?

Not really, painting and tattooing are totally separate worlds for me.  The only inspiration that crosses over are color schemes.  I’m mostly inspired by old lowrider paint jobs and 60’s/70’s tripped out show paint.

8. Which Biltwell Helmet do you have and could you tell us a little about the process of your paint job?

I got a silver flaked 3/4 helmet.  My process is pretty simple, don’t plan anything, just go for it.  Scuff it up, fix a drink, turn on the radio and start taping it out.  I try to let each paint job do what it wants, that way each person gets something different and you never have to worry about doing the same thing twice.

Fulton Paint Works Playlist :

Roky Erickson - The Evil One
Baroness - Red Album
Graveyard - S/T (2008)
Drive By Truckers - Random tracks compiled by someone on YouTube

A huge thanks to Fred for, again, answering our dumb questions about pizzas and whatever else!

Next up on the Q&A : Maxwell Paternoster.

SHRED!!!
